motovun

Although quite small, this little town is pretty special and a must visit when in Istria. Known as the throne of truffles and for the annual Motovun Film Festival, Motovun draws foreigners and Croatians alike to experience the unique atmosphere.

Motovun is situated on a hill and overlooks the surrounding valleys and forests where trained truffle dogs do their job every day. The whole town is made of stone – stone walls, stone houses, stone roads, stone roofs, stone doors... and of course the famous “longest staircase in Croatia” with its 1052 steps.

Next to truffles you will be offered local white wine Malvasia, home made rakija or delicious cherries, peaches and pears that are grown in the area since the Roman times.

In the heart of summer during the film festival, the cobbled streets, apartments and town square fill up with film lovers, rakija fans and everyone else looking for a good time. But even off season, Motovun will definitely charm you.
